ANA ARAGON SIERRA
Official Portfolio
Welcome. Bienvenido.
I'm Ana Aragon Sierra, a physician-journalist currently pursuing my medical degree alongside a master's in mass communication. My writing primarily focuses on health disparities, health education, and community events, presented in both English and Spanish. Through my work, I strive to champion health equity among minority and vulnerable populations while also empowering readers with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their health.
“Shall I tell you the secret of the true scholar?
It is this:
Every man I meet is my master in some point,
and in that I learn of him.”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
I received my medical degree from Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and my master's in mass communications from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Arizona State University. I started my career as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Southwest Health Reporting graduate reporter and later transitioned into the role of a digital marketing specialist at the Digital Audiences Lab. My professional focus has always been on health advocacy, community engagement reporting, and solutions-based journalism.
Throughout my career, I have collaborated closely with both English and Spanish-speaking focus groups to ensure that my stories accurately reflect the health barriers faced by individuals experiencing housing insecurity. Notably, I had the opportunity to work with NPR's "What's Health Got to Do with It?" to host educational episodes covering topics such as preventative sun safety, disparities in skin cancer, diversity initiatives within clinical trials, and support for survivors of sex trafficking.
For my graduate project, I combined traditional grassroots outreach with digital strategies to increase the participation and representation of Hispanic patients in clinical trials. One of my most rewarding experiences was partnering with the local diabetes prevention program, Every Little Step Counts, to enroll Hispanic participants in both clinical trials and community-facing branches of the program. In addition to community engagement, I played a significant role in designing a robust social media presence and website tailored for both patients and providers.
Starting in the summer of 2024, I will begin my residency as a physician at Cambridge Health Alliance Hospital in Boston. My goal is to continue blending medicine with journalism to enhance healthcare accessibility by connecting community members with established resources and organizations. Through evidence-based, community-centric storytelling, I aim to engage, educate, and empower my future patients and the wider public on matters of wellness and health.
